I travel a lot for business and I have gotten it down to a science. When I was single and didn’t have kids, I would often extend business trips by staying the weekend where I was flying in the day before to explore whatever city I was in. Things changed for me when I had a family of my own and now I want to maximize my amount of time with the family and spend as little time as possible doing business travel.
To achieve this, this often means I take the first flight out in the morning and take a mid evening flight home.
Below are some of the tips/tricks I use to make business travel much easier.
- Carry On Luggage Always. I always and will only ever do carry on luggage when staying overnight. It takes longer to check in with luggage and then I have to wait for the luggage to come out of the carousel. This easily adds a lot of unnecessary time. One tip is to get the soft cases vs hard shell so that it can be squished down in some of the smaller regional jets. The samsonite one has lasted me years.
- Packing Cubes. Packing Cubes are essential. They keep everything organized and I can just pull them out of my suitcase and they serve as mini drawer organizers and if it’s a shorter trip, I just keep them in my luggage.
- Keep Toiletries Packed. I don’t want to spend time packing toothbrushes, toothpaste, cosmetics etc. I always have a toiletries bag already packed and it stays in my suitcase. This way I don’t have to worry about forgetting anything and I spend less time packing.
- Extra Set of Chargers Packed . The same goes for chargers.. battery packs etc. I always keep an extra set of chargers packed in my suitcase ready to go so I never have to worry if I remembered XYZ charger. (I have so many!). I like to use a charger/cord organizer so everything looks neat and tidy.
- Medicines You never know when you are going to have a headache or upset stomach. I like to keep a small emergency medicine kit with a few basics in my work/hand bag for easy access on the plane.
- Travel Notebook / Pen Seems obvious, but having a notebook/pen (even though we are in the digital age) is important to have for client meetings or site visits. I like these notebooks because they are polished and professional and make a nice impression.
I am sure I have not exhausted the list of tips, so please share yours and let’s make everyone’s business travel a bit easier.
