A safari in Tanzania is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, but the way you plan it makes all the difference. On my trip, I discovered a few lessons that helped me get the most out of the adventure—and will definitely shape how I travel in the future.

1. Stay Longer in Fewer Places

It’s tempting to want to see everything—Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire—but moving around too much can leave you rushed and exhausted and places start to blur together. Staying longer in 1-2 locations allows you to truly immerse yourself, enjoy the scenery, and notice more about the wildlife.

2. Luxury Is Best When You Have Time to Enjoy It

I love luxury accommodations and we booked our safari with some of the most stunning lodges, but because we were constantly on the move, I wish I could have enjoyed the incredible lodges more. Arriving late, leaving early, and spending all day out on drives meant I missed out on things like the pools and spa treatments. If you’re investing in luxury, give yourself enough time to enjoy it by staying put longer. It also gives you time to soak in the views.

3. Ask About Your Guide

Your guide can make or break your safari experience. They’re not just drivers—they’re teachers, storytellers, and wildlife experts. Often this is overlooked on a safari by guests – before booking, ask your tour operator:

  • How experienced is the guide?
  • Are they staff or contracted?
  • Are they good with children or elderly (if you have them in your group
  • Are the guides expected to join for meal times.

The right guide brings the whole safari to life and I promise can make or break your experience.

4. Pack Plenty of Layers

Safari weather changes constantly. Early mornings can be freezing, afternoons scorching, and evenings cool again. Layers are essential so you can adjust throughout the day—think fleece, scarf, light jacket, and breathable shirts.

5. Do the Hot Air Balloon Ride

It’s expensive, but it’s worth it. Floating above the Serengeti at sunrise is a bucket list experience you’ll never forget. Watching animals move across the plains from the sky is pure magic and the breakfast after is so much fun. We met a lot of great people on the balloon ride. Also, while I was a little terrified, it was not founded – it is so easy, calm and not scary at all.

We booked with Miracle Safari, and they were outstanding. 👉 Book your Miracle Safari hot air balloon ride here
