Fall Road Trips are probably my favorite type of trip. I still have memories as a child as my parents packed up the car, the cooler of food and my sister and I would argue for the best spot in the back seat. These trips were not only economical, but ended up being some of the most fun.

There is something about a road tip – listening to really old cheesy music, stopping off for fast food and playing car games to pass the time.

Traveling from New York, Fall Road Trips are pretty epic – seeing the gorgeous colors of the leaves and feeling the cool air is the perfect combination of beauty and relaxation.

We like to try different Air BnB’s as it gives us a chance to explore different towns. As long as there is a charming town with a few good restaurants we are game!

Before you hit the road, though, it’s crucial to pack smart.

1. Cozy Layers & Blankets

Fall weather can be unpredictable, ranging from sunny and warm to chilly and crisp, especially if you’re traveling through mountainous areas or rural routes. Pack cozy layers like flannels, sweaters, and jackets. Don’t forget a couple of picnic blankets to keep in your trunks—perfect for impromptu picnics.

2. Road Trip Snacks & Drinks

What’s a road trip without snacks? We like to take a few treats like granola, apple slices, nuts, and thermoses of coffee. A reusable water bottle is also a must to stay hydrated. Bonus points for packing a travel cooler to keep everything fresh.

3. Navigation Tools

Even in the age of smartphones, it’s wise to have multiple ways to navigate, especially if you’re heading into rural areas with spotty service. Download offline maps or bring along a good old-fashioned road atlas to avoid getting lost. Make sure your phone’s GPS is up to date and consider a reliable car mount for easy navigation.

4. Portable Charger & Car Chargers

With all the photos, music streaming, and GPS use, your phone’s battery might drain faster than usual. Carry a portable charger (or two) along with car chargers for all your devices to stay powered up. This is especially important if you’re traveling through remote areas where charging opportunities may be limited.

5. Fall Playlist

We use Spotify mix – everyone in our family picks 10 songs and we create a blended playlist so everyone gets to hear their favorite. You can also consider downloading an audio book that the whole family might enjoy.

6. Camera or Smartphone with Extra Storage

Fall is the season for stunning landscapes. Bring along a quality camera or ensure your smartphone has enough storage for all those beautiful shots. Don’t forget an extra SD card or backup cloud storage, just in case!

7. First Aid Kit

This is so important – even if you think you don’t need it. Buy it once, and leave it in your car… A first aid kit is an essential for any road trip. Make sure it includes bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications. You never know when you might need it, especially if you’re taking spontaneous hikes or exploring less-traveled paths.

8. Travel-Friendly Games & Books

If you’re traveling with family or friends, some downtime or long stretches between destinations are inevitable. Our favorites are Uno and Spot It.

9. Emergency Roadside Kit

Flat tires or dead batteries can put a damper on the trip, so it’s best to be prepared. An emergency roadside kit with essentials like jumper cables, tire pressure gauges, and a flashlight can save the day if you run into any car trouble. !

10. Reusable Bags & Trash Bags

A clean car makes for a much more pleasant trip! Pack a couple of ziplock bags for snacks or just in case car sickness , and don’t forget trash bags to keep your vehicle tidy. A few extra wet wipes or hand sanitizer are helpful for quick cleanups after pit stops or outdoor excursions.

11. Travel Apps

Lastly, download a few handy travel apps. Apps like GasBuddy help you find the cheapest fuel along your route, while AllTrails can point you to nearby hikes. If you’re feeling spontaneous, Roadtrippers or Airbnb can help you find cool attractions or last-minute accommodations.

Roadtrips can be so fun and spontaneous and as long as you have a few things ready to go, you can make road trips hassle free.
